Both steering wheels are direct drive technology wheels with 5 Nm of maximum torque, but we have tested them to be able to tell you, which steering wheel is better?

If we look at the comparison table above, we can see that they have practically the same characteristics.

One of the main differences is that the Thrustmaster T598 is compatible with Playstation (PS3, PS4 and PS5) and PC, while the Fanatec CSL DD is only compatible with PC. If you want a 5 Nm Fanatec compatible with Play you have to go for the Fanatec GT DD Pro.

But what other differences do they have?

If you want to know more about the Fanatec CSL DD 5 Nm base we have written an article -> Fanatec CSL DD

We have made a full review of the T598, if you want to read more here is the article -> Thrustmaster T598

    Our Verdict

In my opinion I opt for the Fanatec CSL DD, the main reason is the strength, with the boost kit the DD Pro reaches 8 Nm and the truth is that it is a considerable difference with the 5Nm of the T598.

Also if we compare the ride with the 5 Nm, I get the feeling that the Fanatec exerts more force than the T598. The T598 has a smoother feedback, while the CSL DD is more aggressive.

Another reason why I prefer the CSL DD is because it is 100€ cheaper. Considering that they are similar steering wheels I prefer the Fanatec.

Here is a summary of the features:

    1. Torque:
      • CSL DD: 5 N m extendable up to 8Nm with boost kit.
      • T598: 5 N m.
    2. Feedback
      • CSL DD: Force feedback direct drive that transmits force directly to the steering wheel without gears.
      • T598: Force feedback direct drive (DD).
    3. Platforms:
      • CSL DD: PC.
      • T598: PC, PS5 and PS4, PS3.
    4. Price:
      • CSL DD: 569$
      • T598: The price of the T598 is around 599$.

    Outstanding Common Features:

    • Both: both include hoop and pedals. As a disadvantage I would say that the pedals do not have a clutch. Although in both models you can change the pedals and put better ones with clutch and gear shift.
    • Both steering wheel bases are handbrake compatible.

Driving experience with both steering wheels

Let’s start by talking about the Thrustmaster T598, a steering wheel optimized for Gran Turismo, which makes it an ideal choice if you are a fan of this car simulator.

On the other hand, theFanatec CSL DD, although it also has versions specifically designed for titles such as Gran Turismo 7 or 8, offers exceptional performance with virtually any simulation game, such as iRacing, Forza Motorsport, F1 24, among others.

As for the force feedback, Fanatec‘s force feedback is outstanding: very precise, direct and aggressive, giving you a total connection with what is happening on the track.

For its part, the Thrustmaster T598‘s force feedback is also good, but it lacks that extra touch provided by the Fanatec’s 8 Nm of power.

However, if we set both steering wheels to 5 Nm, the force they offer is quite similar, as expected. Although it has a point more force Fanatec.

    Steering wheel rims

    Fanatec CSL DD hoop
    Fanatec CSL DD Ring

As you can see the two rings are quite similar. The T598 one is more designed for Playstation with the typical buttons. In this sense I like the T598 better, the buttons are more intuitive and easier to operate.

The Fanatec hoop has a small LED display that allows you to see the speed or revs, which is nice, but in my view unnecessary.

As for the materials they are made of, the Thrustmaster is a little better quality, but the Fanatec is also very good.

Both wheel bases allow the rims to be changed to improve the kit.

Fanatec CSL DD vs Thrustmaster T598: Final Recommendation

Thrustmaster T598 vs Fanatec CSL DD? Our recommendation is to buy the Fanatec CSL DD, the FFB has more power and the pedals are better.

The 5 Nm of the T598 may not be enough after some time playing. When you become a pro, you will need at least 8-9 Nm. So the Fanatec CSL DD will last you more years.

Now, the T598 is also a good steering wheel with good features and if you have Playstation you have no choice but to choose it or go for the Fanatec DD Pro which is a bit more expensive.

In case you decide to buy one or the other, you can use my links which are safe and also give me a small commission. In the case of the Thrustmaster is currently available on Amazon.

If you opt for Fanatec you will have to go to the page Fanatec official website (the European site!). I have shopped on this site for a long time and have had no problems.
